History

James Carty McSween, born December 18, 1898 in Newport, Tennessee, served in the United States Navy during World War I, as a farm machine mechanic, and as an officer in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He supported his family as a rural mail carrier while he attended the John R. Neal Law School in Knoxville until his admission to the Bar of the Tennessee Supreme Court on March 26, 1938. He opened his law office in Newport as a solo practitioner in 1941 as a general practitioner dealing primarily with commercial law, real estate transactions, and decedent's estates. He was appointed United States Commissioner in 1948 and served until his death in 1962.

James C. McSween Jr. graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1952 and from the University of Tennessee College of Law in December 1953. He was admitted to the bar of the Tennessee Supreme Court on April 5, 1954 and joined his father in the practice of law in Newport under the firm name, McSween and McSween. After serving three years in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, he returned to practice with his father in 1957. He was appointed United States Magistrate in 1962 and Chancellor of the 13th Chancery Division in 1976.

James C. McSween III, born March 5, 1957, is a graduate of Carson-Newman College in 1979 and the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1986. He joined the firm upon his admission to the bar in 1986. His emphasis was on litigation, criminal defense, and some real estate transactions until his disabling illness on September 2, 1998 forced his retirement from active practice.

Jeffery Scott Greene received his undergraduate degree from Tusculum College in 2003 with a B.S. in Organizational Management. In 2006 he graduated with a J.D. from the Appalachian School of Law. He had served as an intern in the Office of McSween and McSween during his law school vacations and joined the firm immediately upon his graduation and his admission to the bar on October 19, 2006.

James Carty McSween IV graduated from Carson-Newman College in May 2010 and from the University of Memphis School of Law in May 2014. Carty was admitted to the bar of the Tennessee Supreme Court on October 13, 2014 and joined McSween, McSween, and Greene.

The firm has been located at its present location at 321 East Broadway in Newport, Tennessee since 1966. Since January 2012, the office has operated under the name McSween, McSween, & Greene, PLLC.
